Lula’s ministries headed by women are the most coveted by allies

Ministries headed by women have been the most frequent targets of pressure from parliamentarians seeking more space in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Recently, the president had to make a public defense of the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, in the face of insinuations from neo-allies that the portfolio was at stake.

“I am sure that few times we had the chance that we have today, of having a woman with the quality of Nísia Trindade to take care of the people”,

said Lula in a speech at the National Health Conference.

Former president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade was elevated to minister for being a technician. She is not affiliated with a political party.

In a similar condition, Minister Ana Moser has also seen her portfolio being coveted, above all, by deputies from the so-called centrão.

The Ministry of Sport has a low budget compared to other areas of government. For 2023, the forecast is R$ 1.9 billion.

However, this value can be boosted with parliamentary amendments and with the income that can be obtained from the regulation of sports betting in the country. The proposal is about to be sent to the National Congress.

Unlike the two colleagues who are remaining in office, with the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Carneiro, it did not work out.

After members of the government confirmed that she would be replaced, the president’s ally made the position available. The exchange should take place this week.

With the Ministers of the Environment, Marina Silva, and the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, there was no public pressure to “hand over the ministries” in exchange for support.

However, the two folders were emptied when deputies and senators voted on the provisional measure that restructured the government.

Important issues, such as the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) and the demarcation of indigenous lands, began to be dealt with by other ministries.
