Chosen to build bridges between the government and agribusiness, the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, has so far played much more the role of a “cushion” to mitigate President Lula’s and PT’s recurring friction with the sector.

Fávaro himself, at times, ends up adopting a dubious speech in which, at one moment, he criticizes the land invasions and asks for punishment for the crimes of the MST, and, at another, he celebrates the fact that the movement traveled with Lula to China and was invited to join the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development of the Presidency of the Republic (CDESS), Lula’s Conselhão. More recently, he declared that “there is no Ministry of Agriculture without the National Supply Company”, which Lula transferred to the Ministry of Agrarian Development.

It is likely that Lula will return Conab to the Ministry of Agriculture, as Fávaro wants, in a game rehearsed to gain sympathy from the agriculture and livestock sector. The test of fire, however, will come to Fávaro in important votes in Congress in which the left will clash with almost all of the minister’s positions.
