President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will present to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, this Friday (10), the idea of creating the so-called “Clube da Paz”, a multilateral body to negotiate the end of the war in Russia against Ukraine. He traveled to Washington this Thursday (9) along with the ministers of Finance, Environment and Foreign Affairs.

The idea of the organization was already suggested to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a visit to Brazil last week, and presented to French President Emmanuel Macron, according to Lula.

However, the expectation of having the support of Joe Biden may be frustrated, according to former American ambassador Melvin Levitsky, who occupied the diplomatic representation in Brazil between 1994 and 1998.

In an interview with the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, Melvin says that Brazil has not yet reached a “stage” enough to place itself as a negotiator for the conflict, although it has an important voice in the United Nations (UN). For him, this ambition is natural given the size of the country, but that there should be no response from the United States.

“The Americans are not going to criticize Brazil’s movement, but I don’t see any interest in having the country involved in negotiations or diplomatic activities,” he says.

In addition to discussing possible solutions to the conflict in Europe, the meeting between Lula and Biden will also cover topics such as the economy, climate change and democracy after the January 8 acts.
