The bilateral meeting between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, was decisive for the president’s trip to the coronation of King Charles III.

The Brazilian was one of the six heads of state invited to a meeting of this type with the premier. The initial forecast was that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, would represent the president at the ceremony.

In addition to Lula, Sunak received the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hammad, and the prime ministers of New Zealand, Chris Hipikins, of Australia, Anthony Albanese, and of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, the last three members of the Commonwealth, the community of nations that brings together, for the most part, countries that formed the British Empire in the past.

Lula met for about 50 minutes with Sunak at Downing Street, seat of the British government, in London, this Friday (5). The prime minister pledged to contribute to the Amazon Fund, a reward mechanism for environmental preservation.

In addition to the environmental agenda, the prime minister spoke of increasing trade between the two countries and putting Brazil back in the international debate.
