Lula’s government intends to send to Congress a series of public security projects, called the “Democracy Package”
Brasilia DF) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced, this Friday (21), the submission to the National Congress of a series of bills aimed at combating crimes against the Democratic State of Law. Among the proposals is a penalty of up to 40 years in jail for anyone who attempts against the lives of Presidents of the Powers (Executive, Legislative and Judiciary, the President of the Chamber, the Vice President of the Republic), Ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) or the Attorney General of the Republic.
The measure comes days after Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, and his family claimed to have been victims of aggression during a trip abroad.
Moraes reports being harassed by a group of Brazilians at Rome’s international airport on July 14. Those involved would be four members of a family from Santa Bárbara D’Oeste, in the interior of SP: the couple Roberto Mantovani Filho and Andréa Mantovani; son-in-law Alex Zanatta; in addition to the couple’s son, Giovani Mantovani, who would have tried to contain the other three. At the time, Andréa supposedly approached the minister and called him a “bandit, communist and bought”.
In addition to the insults against Moraes, the minister’s son reportedly suffered a slap from Roberto. images received by the PF from the Rome airport prove the magistrate’s version. The suspect of attacking Moraes’ son says that the “slap or push was an act of defense”.
The government named the measures the “Democracy Package”. The announcement took place at the same ceremony in which the decree establishing restrictions on the use of firearms by the civilian population was signed.
The bill that deals with crimes against democracy also provides for a sentence of 6 to 12 years for those who organize or lead anti-democratic movements; from 8 to 20 years for those who finance anti-democratic movements; and from 6 to 12 years, plus the penalty corresponding to violence, for crimes that threaten the physical integrity and freedom of the authorities of the Republic.
The package is also a reaction by the Lula government to the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8. All measures will need to go through votes in the House and Senate to start counting.
