President had been complaining of pain in recent months
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is already at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, in Brasília, where he will undergo the procedure to restore his hip joint. He arrived at the unit around 8am, this Friday (29). The exact time of the procedure was not announced, but a press conference with the medical team is scheduled for the end of the day.
Lula has osteoarthritis in the head of the femur in his right hip, which is wear and tear on the cartilage that covers the joints, which causes pain and even limitations in movement. In recent months, the president has been complaining of pain more frequently and is optimistic about the outcome of the procedure.
The surgery, with general anesthesia, should last a few hours, and the president should remain in the hospital until Tuesday (3). There is no expectation that Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will assume the Presidency of the Republic during this period.
After being discharged from hospital, the president will go to Palácio da Alvorada, his official residence, from where he will leave for four weeks, while he fully recovers from the procedure. The Presidency’s office also informed that Lula will not make any trips in the period of four to six weeks after the surgery.
The next international commitment should be the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the end of November, followed by a visit to Germany, on December 4th and 5th.
Surgery
According to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (Into), the hip is a joint formed by a set of bones, muscles and ligaments that unite the pelvis (pelvis) to the femur (thigh), enabling the support of the body’s weight and ensuring a stable and harmonious walk.
When he is discharged from the hospital, the president will go to Palácio da Alvorada, his official residence, from where he will also leave for 4 weeks, while he fully recovers from the surgery. Lula’s advisor also informed that the president will not make any trips for 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery. The president’s next international tour should be the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the end of November, followed by a visit to Germany, at the beginning of December.
