Lula transfers arms control from the CACs to the PF and restricts calibers

The gun control of Collectors, Shooters and Hunters (CACs) in Brazil will become the responsibility of the Federal Police (PF). The determination, made by means of a decree, was announced this Friday (21), by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Today, control is carried out by the Brazilian Army, based on the law.

The published decree also resumes the restriction of 9 mm weapons, which had their access released during the government of former President Michel Temer (MDB). The announcement was made at an event at the Planalto Palace attended by Lula, the Minister of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), Flávio Dino, and authorities in the area of ​​public security.

According to the decree, the change in competence over gun control will be made through a progressive migration to the Federal Police. Therefore, the Brazilian Army will no longer have competence over civil activities involving arms and ammunition. The Lula government also foresaw the reduction of the validity of firearms registrations from 10 to 3 years.

The decree also reduces the amount of weapons and ammunition that can be acquired by civilians, including hunters, shooters and collectors. Another constant determination in the decree was the resumption of the distinction between weapons used by security agencies and weapons accessible to ordinary citizens. The CACs will also not be able to carry municipal traffic.
