President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke this Thursday (6th) by telephone with the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida. According to a statement released by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conversation lasted about 25 minutes.

The Brazilian president thanked the invitation to participate in the G7 meeting, which takes place in May in Hiroshima, Japan. Kishida said he “expects to discuss various issues for the international community” with Lula during the meeting.

The G7 meeting should bring together the leaders of the United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada. Brazil’s last participation in a meeting of the group took place in 2008, during Lula’s second term.

Also according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, during the telephone conversation, Fumio Kishida and Lula “exchanged opinions” on topics such as East Asia, including China and North Korea, and the situation of the war in Ukraine.

The two leaders also confirmed that they will strengthen their cooperation at the United Nations this year, when both will serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council, and that they will also “work together” on reforming the same UN Security Council.
