Lula takes good advantage of the rearview bonus and postpones the burden – 12/30/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

Lula took good advantage of what could be called a “rearview bonus” in this first year. The decision to halt some of Bolsonaro’s most destructive policies earned points right from the start. The contrast also offered the opportunity to put in place management with both feet and head. This is the government that will be judged at the end of its term.

The environment, diplomacy and other areas have been removed from the zone of influence of far-right rancor. The transition to normality meant that a president could be held accountable for his preservation commitments, his international alliances and the results of choices made outside the field of conspiracy theories.

The recovery of a social agenda meant that the issue was no longer just a peripheral tool to provide stability to the government. There were even people in Congress concerned about the costs of this protection network, despite having helped the last president break into the safe to finance an electoral package.

After four years of coup preparation and the January 8th attack, a government was established that admitted to submitting to the counterweights of a conservative Congress, without calling for demonstrations for a new AI-5. On the negative side, he sought comfort in a reprehensible embrace with the Supreme Court and gave in to an accommodation demanded by the generals.

The burden of a government considered normal is a higher burden. The comparison effect has a limited duration, there are fewer crazy things to distract the voter and there is a greater demand for concrete results. Not planning a coup, not threatening courts, not detonating vaccines and not destroying the country’s reputation counts a lot, but it is insufficient.

The real challenge of the third Lula government has not even begun. It will be necessary to maintain a balance in the economy, carry out reforms in education and health in addition to course correction, find a rational policy for public security and, also, stifle the risks of corruption in a bloated machine.
