Lula speaks on shelf of unproductive area against invasion – 06/27/2023 – Politics

President Lula (PT) said this Tuesday (27th) that his government will create a “shelf” of unproductive land so that there can be a policy of settlements before social movements invade rural properties.

“I spoke with minister Paulo Teixeira [Desenvolvimento Agrário e Agricultura Familiar] these days: ‘Hey, Paulo, why do we have to wait for the movement to invade a land for us to send Incra to assess whether it is productive or unproductive?'”, said Lula, during live on social networks.

Lula then stated that he would then put together a list of lands that will be evaluated by Incra (National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform) and will be made available to start a settlement policy.

“Instead of people invading, we offer [as terras], organize. This is something new that I did not think about in the first and second terms. I thought now and let’s do it. We are going to make a shelf of the so-called unproductive lands in this country and vacant lands that we can make an agrarian settlement, for those who want to work in the field without having to fight with anyone”, he added.

The issue of land invasion caused great wear and tear on the government at the beginning of the mandate, with the MST even occupying an area belonging to Embrapa. The actions led the Chamber of Deputies to open a CPI to investigate the matter.

In addition to the risks of investigating an allied movement, the invasions also created difficulties for the Lula government to attract agribusiness, a sector that became close to Bolsonaro.

In one of the attempts at rapprochement, the Lula government will launch this Tuesday the 2023/2024 Crop Plan, which will have a record value of R$ 364 billion.

This Tuesday (27), Lula carried out his third live broadcast on social networks, the Conversation with the President. As in the previous ones, he was interviewed by journalist Marcos Uchôa.

Lives are attempts by the Presidency’s Communication Secretariat to boost the performance of the representative on social networks, a field that has been greatly explored by Bolsonarism.

The government sought to make it clear that the broadcasts would be different from the lives of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who often used the space to shoot fake news and attacks against opponents. Lula, however, broke his promise in the second broadcast and used the medium to attack opponents.

He again called Jair Bolsonaro a fascist and said that the then president, after losing the elections, was “locked inside the house to prepare the coup.”

This Tuesday’s live dedicated a lot of time to softer issues, such as the president’s personal life and some behind the scenes of his official trips abroad.

Lula said that he doesn’t like living in the Alvorada Palace, because everything is too big, he has to walk “200 meters” to get a coffee, another 40 meters to go to the bathroom.

The president then reported that he is “missing” his home in São Paulo.

“Yesterday I was complaining to the [primeira-dama] Janja who was homesick, I haven’t been home for a while. I need to go to see my children, including. But then came the trip to Bahia, I have to travel,” he said.

Lula also commented that he doesn’t usually eat well during trips abroad and that he doesn’t like palace food, in general. In a moment widely explored by the interviewer, to show the president’s personal side, he replied that he prefers “beans and rice” and meals of greater substance.

The president also addressed the issue of inequality on several occasions, adding that this is one of the points that unites him with Pope Francis, whom he met at the Vatican last week. He reported that the pope and he are working to transform the issue of inequality into something capable of “indignant society”.

“Pope Francisco is the great leader that we have today on the face of the earth. Although he is not a militant politician, his speeches are words of very strong content, such as the issue of peace, of inequality”, he stated.
