Lula signs demarcation of six indigenous lands

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signs, this Friday (28), decrees for the approval of six indigenous lands, during the closing of the Free Land Camp 2023, in Brasilia. The processes had been stalled since 2018, as former president Jair Bolsonaro stated that he would not make any demarcation during his government.
TI Kariri-Xocó, in Alagoas, with a population of 2,300 people and declaratory decree of the year 2006.
TI Rio dos Índios, in the Rio Grande do Sulwith a population of 143 people and declaratory decree of 2004.
TI Tremembé da Barra do Mundaú, in Ceará, with a population of 580 people and declaratory decree of the year 2015.
TI Uneiuxi, in Amazonas, with a population of 249 people and declaratory decree of the year 2006.
TI Avá-Canoeiro, in Goiás, with a population of nine people and declaratory decree of the year 1996.
The declaratory ordinance is one of the phases of the process of homologation of an indigenous land. After identification studies, the federal government recognizes the area as belonging to a certain indigenous group.
The information on the approvals had been anticipated this week by the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara. Also in January, Guajajara told vehicles from Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), including Agência Brasil, that 14 demarcation processes for Union areas were ready to be homologated.
This Friday (28), Lula also signs decrees that recreate the National Council for Indigenous Policy (CNPI) and that establish the Management Committee of the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI).
The objective of this policy is to promote and guarantee the protection, recovery, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in indigenous territories. According to the Presidency, the initiative ensures the improvement of the quality of life of the indigenous people with full conditions for the physical and cultural reproduction of current and future generations, in addition to guaranteeing the integrity of the tangible and intangible heritage of these peoples.
“Today I have the joy of signing the ratification of six indigenous territories. The fight for the demarcation of indigenous peoples is a fight for respect, rights and protection of our nature and country. We are moving forward”, the president highlighted the measure on his Twitter.
Still at the Terra Livre Camp, President Lula announced the release of R$ 12.3 million to the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), for the acquisition of inputs, tools and equipment for flour mills, recovering the productive capacity of indigenous communities yanomami, in Roraima.
The Yanomami TI is the largest in the country in terms of territory and has been suffering from the invasion of miners. Contamination of water by mercury used in mining and illegal deforestation impacted the safety and availability of food in communities. The situation generated a humanitarian crisis that led to more than 500 children dying from malnutrition and preventable causes in the last four years.
Since January, the federal government has been working to evict miners and support indigenous peoples.
