Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, from the Federal Supreme Court (STF)denied two habeas corpus that asked for the freedom of Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Public Security for the Federal District. Torres has been arrested since January 14th on suspicion of participating in coup acts in Brasilia.
In both cases, Barroso pointed out that the Court jurisprudence does not allow habeas corpus against monocratic decision of court ministers. “Under these conditions, there is no alternative but to deem the process extinct, without resolution of the merits, due to the inadequacy of the chosen path”, decided the minister. Torres’ preventive detention was determined by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and his decision was endorsed by the Court.
