President Lula (PT) avoided making harsher criticisms of the actions of the Armed Forces in the country and said that he prefers not to dwell on the consequences of the 1964 coup because this “is part of the past” and he wants to “move the country forward”.

He also added that at no other time in history have members of the Forces been punished as much as they are currently being punished for their involvement in coup plots and for their participation in the January 8 attacks.

Lula gave an interview to RedeTV’s “É Notícia” program, which aired on Tuesday night (27). The PT member was then asked what the Armed Forces’ position should be in relation to possible celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the military coup, on March 31st.

“I, honestly, will deal with it as calmly as possible. I am more worried about the coup of January 8, 2023 than about 64. I was 17 years old, I was inside the Independência metallurgical plant when the coup of 64 happened. This is already part of history. It has already caused the suffering it caused. The people have already won the right to democratize this country”, he stated.

“The generals who are in power today were children at that time. Some of them I don’t think were even born at that time. What I can’t do is not know how to move history forward, always keep rehashing it, always rehashing it, in other words, it’s a part of Brazil’s history that we still don’t have all the information about, because there are still people missing, because there are people who can find out. But, honestly, I’m not going to dwell on it and I’m going to try to move this country forward”, completed.

The president then stated that society and the military cannot be treated and see each other as enemies. And he added that he is trying to rebuild loyalty within the Forces.

At a time when military personnel are targets of the Federal Police, on suspicion of involvement in a coup plot to keep Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in power, Lula added that he is looking for people in the Armed Forces with democratic qualities to exercise command.

“At no time in history have the military been punished as they are being punished now. At no time has a general been called by the Federal Police to give a statement, colonel, everyone, everyone who proves that they participated will be judged”, stated the president.

The president also commented on the event organized by former president Bolsonaro, which brought together thousands of people on Avenida Paulista, on Sunday (25). Lula said he did not consider the presence of several governors to be a bad thing, many of whom are currently in dialogue with the Palácio do Planalto.

Governors such as Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil) from Goiás and Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) from São Paulo participated, both of whom are currently in frequent dialogue with the Palácio do Planalto.

The PT member then drew a parallel with the campaign for Diretas Já, in which there were politicians from different regions and political wings on the platforms. And he recalled that everyone was elected with Bolsonaro’s support, so it was natural that they were there to support him. On the other hand, he stated that the demonstration was organized to “defend coup plotters”.

He also added that Bolsonaro’s speech and others present were “commissioned by lawyers”, which is why he did not go into criticism, for fear of legal consequences. He said the speech was “Vaseline.”

“What I think is that the speeches, as not everyone gave speeches, the speeches were very Vaseline. The speech was a speech recommended by lawyers. ‘Look, be careful with your words, don’t say anything that could testify against an institution, Don’t say anything that could testify against democracy.” So everyone was there, it looked like a school for beginners”, said the president.

“But the concrete fact is that the act was done to defend the coup plotters. This is a concrete fact. The act was done to defend, they want to give a political dimension, of democracy, what they did and not what the Supreme Court did Cut, because what they want to convey is actually this. Democracy is the way they wanted it,” he added.

Lula even compared the behavior of the Bolsonaristas with that of ex-BBB Bambam, who was defeated in a boxing fight by former champion Acelino Popó Freitas. He said that now they are all “piano”.

“But it’s a bit like Bambam, the big guy, thinking he can do anything and let’s go. Now that the pig has got its tail twisted, the animals are playing the game. Now it’s democracy, now it’s a State of Peace. They don’t have peace. They They lie all the time, they lie all the time, they lie. If we could measure per square kilometer the amount of lies they tell, we would go around all the galaxies, and there would still be lies left”, says the president.

Lula also criticized the former president’s request for amnesty for those arrested on January 8th. “When citizens there ask for amnesty, they are saying: ‘No, forgive the coup plotters’. They are confessing to the crime.”

The PT member also stated that the demonstration was a “protest against democracy”. “They [os presos pelo 8/1] They haven’t even been tried yet, they are imprisoned as a guarantee of peace and order in this country. We still haven’t found out who ordered it, who financed it, because there was an attempted coup.”
