Lula says that Bolsonaro “tried to carry out a coup” and that the former president could be arrested

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Monday (4) that former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) “tried to carry out a coup” and “knows he could be arrested”. The PT member commented on the pro-Bolsonaro demonstration held on February 25th. The event brought together thousands of supporters of the former president on Avenida Paulista.

“I don’t know if you noticed that there was an act last Sunday [dia 25]. What was that act? That act is from a citizen who knows that he did shit, that he was stupid, that he tried to carry out a coup, that he is going to court and that he will be judged and if he is judged he could be arrested and he is trying to escape”, said Lula during the opening of the 4th National Culture Conference.

Bolsonaro is one of those investigated in the inquiry into an alleged coup attempt to keep him in power after the 2022 elections. The former president has any participation in the alleged coup plot. “In a coup you have to have weapons, you have to have a conspiracy, you are a tank on the street, you have to have an authority, a personality leading this coup. There was none of that. How crazy is it to talk about a coup”, said Bolsonaro in an interview with radio CBN Recife on February 21st.

During his speech, Lula stated that the testimonies in the investigation must show “the naked truth” that the former president “tried to carry out a coup” in the country. On the 22nd, more than 20 targets of the investigation were interviewed by the Federal Police, Bolsonaro remained silent.

“When you have access, when it is published, I think we will have access through the reports that we see every day of people’s statements… The naked truth is that this citizen tried to carry out a coup in the country. When he was locked inside the house for several weeks, we didn’t know if he was crying, what he was doing, he was preparing a coup. He was trying to imagine what he was going to do to not let the elected president take office,” said Lula.

The PT member also criticized Bolsonaro for going to the United States before the presidential inauguration, at the end of 2022. Lula accused the former president of financing the protesters who stood in front of the barracks.

“I think he got scared and decided to leave for the United States so as not to see the inauguration. He imagined that the people he paid, that he organized and that he helped finance to stay at the barracks doors were going to carry out the coup and, possibly, he thought that he would return anointed by the fascist people of this country”, said the head of the Executive .
