Unshakable Democracy

President spoke at an event about the undemocratic acts of 8/1

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended, this Monday (8), an exemplary punishment for anyone who had any participation in the coup acts of January 8 last year. In a speech, Lula stated that pardoning these people “would sound like impunity”. The statement was made during an event in defense of democracy, held in the Black Room of the National Congress. The event marked one year of the depredation of the palaces in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília.

“All those who financed, planned and executed the coup attempt must be exemplarily punished. There is no forgiveness for anyone who attacks democracy, their country and their own people. Forgiveness would sound like impunity. And impunity, as a safe conduit for new terrorist acts”,

highlighted Lula. He echoed the message of the authorities present at the event.

The Democracia Unabalada event had, in addition to Lula, the presence of the presidents of the National Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, as well as parliamentarians, ministers, former ministers and representatives of civil society. The governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fátima Bezerra, was the first to speak, speaking on behalf of the country’s governors.

Lula also noted that the attempt to overthrow democracy, which is based on disrespect for the results of the elections, would have drastic consequences for the country’s political stability.

“If the coup attempt had been successful, much more than windows, furniture, works of art and historical objects would have been stolen or destroyed. The sovereign will of the Brazilian people, expressed at the polls, would have been stolen. And democracy, destroyed. At this point, Brazil would be plunged into economic and social chaos. The fight against hunger and inequalities would have gone back to square one”,

he stated.

The president also praised the “courage of parliamentarians, governors, ministers of the Supreme Court, ministers of State, legalist military personnel and, above all, the majority of the Brazilian people”. For the president, this courage guaranteed that today would be a “celebration of the victory of democracy over authoritarianism”.

Taking advantage of his presence in the Senate, Lula also mentioned the Legislative Police workers, who refused to join the coup and defended the National Congress building during the invasion, even though they were in the minority.
