President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Friday (22) that First Lady Janja da Silva demands more female participation in the government.

“I have a woman at home who can’t see a photo of me with just a man and she gets mad at me. Hang out with Stuckert [fotógrafo oficial da Presidência]. And sometimes it’s true. There is still domination at the tables. The majority are men in the things we do. It’s something we have to learn”, said Lula during a Christmas ceremony with waste pickers, at the Mané Garrincha Stadium, in Brasília.

The PT member also said that the idea that unions are just a man’s thing is “over” and defended that women occupy more spaces, and that men can also be more “supportive”.

“In the kitchen, it is important that we start to occupy space inside to be part of the services they provide. [as mulheres] they do. It is the solidarity, humanist and democratic counterpart. We share it, you know?”, she said.

During the event, Janja countered Lula by saying that “it is not true” that he is making demands on the president. She highlighted that the first year of Lula’s government was one of “reconstruction” and that now they will have a moment to “rest a little”.

This Friday (22), President Lula and First Lady Janja participated in the traditional Catadores Christmas, which the PT member has held since his first term. In 2022, as president-elect, he attended the event held in Baixada do Glicério, in São Paulo.
