Lula receives Lira under pressure by base and PL from Fake News – 02/05/2023 – Politics

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) receives this Tuesday morning (2) the mayor, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), for a private meeting at the Alvorada Palace. Lira arrived at the official residence of the Presidency of the Republic around 9:15 am.

The meeting takes place on the day scheduled for the vote on the Fake News PL, whose text has been suffering from growing opposition. There is a possibility that the proposal will be withdrawn from the agenda, amid the risk of defeats. It also happens after criticism of the government’s political articulation.

Lula’s allies, however, claim that the meeting had already been scheduled since last week and that the objective would be to discuss the government’s relationship with the Chamber. The meeting, however, is not on Lula’s official agenda.

The vote on the Fake News PL in the Chamber of Deputies, scheduled for this Tuesday (2), may be postponed in view of the chances of the text being rejected by the plenary.

After meeting with Lula, Lira must meet with party leaders to make a decision. The text’s rapporteur, Orlando Silva (PC do B-SP), should also meet with his peers.

The postponement is considered a likely scenario by both the opposition and the government – the Planalto Palace endorses the bill.

The urgency of the proposal was approved last Tuesday (25) by 238 votes in favor and 192 against and an agreement reached at the time between party leaders scheduled for a vote this Tuesday.

Throughout the week, however, the project began to face increasing resistance from the opposition and the evangelical group, increasing the risk of the text being rejected.

In addition, the Chamber has been criticizing the political articulation of the government, in charge of the Minister of Institutional Relations Alexandre Padilha.

In an interview with the newspaper O Globo, Lira harshly criticized Padilha. She said that the minister is a “fine and polite fellow”, but that he has had difficulties. “It has not been reflected in a good satisfaction ratio. Perhaps the group needs to decentralize more, trust more. If you centralize, you hold a lot”, he said to the newspaper.
