What has already changed with the elections? We had a president who was self-aggrandizing to the point of declaring himself immune to the coronavirus and deserving of the Medal of Scientific Merit. An unmeasured narcissism for which the country paid with the death of thousands of people who might not have died. No one doubts that anymore. Had the lockdown been serious and the vaccine given in a timely manner, the death toll would have been significantly lower.

Narcissism is deadly as the myth shows. So handsome and vain, Narciso despised all suitors and fell in love with his own reflection. Unable to stop looking at himself, he couldn’t leave the edge of the fountain where he saw his reflected image and, so fascinated by himself, he died of hunger and thirst. He became the symbol of lack of empathy for others and individualism.

Like Narciso, the ex-president only existed for and for his image. His bottom lip quivered whenever he needed to make a speech.

He feared nothing more than the platform for which, given his limited intellectual capacity, he was not born. As only the word allows justifying his own actions, he could only be authoritarian. If he used his word to attack the institutions or provoke provocations, he left the scene as the general arsonist of the Republic.

In democracy, those who govern need to use their authority without abusing the power granted to them and, for that, they have to listen. What Lula is doing is this. For example, her speech to university presidents. “Don’t think that Lula is going to choose the dean he likes. Those who have to like the dean are the professors.”

Lula uses speech to position himself as someone who respects the desire and knowledge of the other. For this reason, before the same audience, she said that the university community, and not the president, knows who is able to manage the university.

Since he respects other people’s knowledge, he values ​​listening and meeting with different corporations to hear complaints, demands, “find out what is missing and what is not missing”. He insists on the idea that it will always be possible to disagree, “but in a civilized way because that’s what democracy is”. He makes a point of passing on what he knows.

He wants to “defeat” hatred, fake news, fanaticism so that Brazilian society can smile again, enjoy music, Carnival and football, “like people to be humanists, people to be more fraternal, more supportive”.

There are circumstances in which hatred needs to be defeated as Lula did, by quickly dismissing and exonerating those who complied with vandalism. In his memoirs about Auschwitz, Primo Levi wrote that, against a furious wolf, one can do anything: lie, betray, kill.

In other circumstances, it will not be a matter of defeating hatred, but of defeating it, not instigating more hatred, “containing the pelting” as Justice Luís Roberto Barroso wisely said to a journalist, when leaving the STF vandalized.

With regard to fake news, only a new regulation on information will resolve this practice that was systematically adopted by the KGB, where the more disinformation an official produced, the higher he rose in the hierarchy of the institution. Putin was the chief misinformer.

As for fanaticism, it is necessary to denounce its discourse wherever it appears. Religious fanaticism, during the pandemic, was as responsible for the contamination as the former president.

According to one of the evangelical bishops, the concern about the new virus resulted from a tactic by Satan to spread fear. Like it or not, we are still grappling with this and other forms of fanaticism such as racism, sexism and nationalism.

Lula opposes all of them. She showed this by composing her ministry and announcing a government program that takes international solidarity into account and can reintegrate the country into the world. It will be a glory if we can finally stop living isolated on the world map of Brazil.
