Lula needs a good dose of self-criticism – 03/15/2024 – Dora Kramer

It’s always good for governments to be concerned about food prices. Even though this concern is aroused by the drop in the President of the Republic’s popularity ratings in the polls, as now when Luiz Inácio da Silva is trying to contain the general famine to reduce personal damage.

An order was issued to prepare measures that are friendly to the population’s pockets. This in order to try to reverse the scenario of a drop in the government’s positive assessment recorded by four opinion polls last week.

Such commitment can improve things, but it does not solve the problem because the bad rates are not just due to economic issues. There is more to consider.

From Planalto’s perspective, the whole thing is to blame for food inflation combined with inefficient communication of good government actions. It’s the topic of the moment and it has its reason for being. After all, in Lula’s first governments, qualitative research captured one of, if not the main, reasons for public success in the following answer: “The food is cheap”. The economy only reveals part of the story.

Two decades ago the time was laughing and frank. Favorable international environment, and internally a lace-fisted opposition. Dealing with the meekness of the PSDB —the villain that left you a blessed legacy— was much easier than facing the ferocity of the right and its extremes.

Lula without a filter always existed, but the degree of tolerance towards the character changed, which, to make matters worse, added resentment and added massive doses of omnipotence to his performance.

Public atonement is not expected from any ruler. But in private palace conversations, and especially in the president’s dealings with his pillow, it would be worth taking into account the guilt that the full-of-himself Lula 3 has in this office.

Otherwise, you will be trapped in the grip of self-deception and will not be able to change the adverse scenario.
