The meeting took place at the end of the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the G20, in New Delhi

After two meetings canceled on different schedules, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met for the first time, this Sunday (10), with Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, the bilateral meeting was canceled due to “urgencies in the entourage” from the Arab country.

The prince was the one who presented the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro (PL) with jewelry kits, valued by the Federal Police at R$ 5 million, which should have entered the Union’s collection in 2021, but ended up becoming the possession of the then agent.

The jewelry was seized at an airport in São Paulo, and the police launched investigations to find out why part of the gifts, such as a watch, was sold illegally in the United States.

But Lula did not discuss jewelry with the prince. They met shortly after the end of the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the G20, in New Delhi, India, to talk about investments and good relations.

In the conversation, Lula welcomed Saudi Arabia as a new member of the BRICS, which will have six new countries as of January 2024: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran.

Oil and Gas

The Saudi representatives indicated to President Lula that they want to expand investments in Brazil, mainly in the area of oil and gas, as well as in green sources, in addition to resuming a commercial agenda that has been at a standstill in recent years.

It was also agreed that a delegation of Saudi businessmen and authorities should visit Brazil soon to learn about the portfolio of New PAC projects, which are open to foreign investment. This agenda will be discussed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

According to president Lula, the growth of Saudi investment in Brazil is welcome and may be important in the process of transition to a more sustainable economy, with emphasis on high technology sectors, such as the development of hybrid engines and also green hydrogen.

The president also spoke about trade relations between the two countries, which have been growing every year. In 2022, the traded volume reached US$ 8.2 billion.
