Lula is irritated by Cid’s use of a uniform at the 8/1 CPI – 07/12/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

President Lula (PT) was irritated by the fact that Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid gave testimony in uniform at the CPI of 8/1.

Unlike his defense minister, José Múcio, who did not see the act as an affront, Lula was upset and expressed his displeasure to his direct assistants and also to members of the top echelon of the government.

He also made his outrage reach higher echelons of his administration’s military management.

At a time when the government is making an effort to separate the Armed Forces from civilian activities, Mauro Cid, who is being investigated for several crimes, wore his uniform to testify at the commission, mixing with the military.

For Lula, the former assistant to Jair Bolsonaro (PL) should have gone to the CPI in civilian clothes, since the crimes he is accused of are not directly related to military activity.

Cid is being investigated for falsifying Covid-19 vaccine cards from his own family members and Bolsonaro.

He is also the target of action over the jewels that the former president received as a gift from Saudi Arabia, and is also suspected of participating in the attempted coup d’état to keep Bolsonaro in power.

The Army itself, however, claims that it instructed Cid to wear the uniform because he understood that he was summoned by the CPI to deal with “issues related to the function for which he was designated by the Force”.

Minister José Múcio told the Sheet who did not see Mauro Cid’s decision to testify in uniform as an affront to the CPI on January 8 and said that other active-duty military personnel could do the same until the end of the commission, if they wanted to.

Múcio also said that he awaits a verdict from the CPI on the participation of the military in the coup attacks, but freed the Army Command from blame. The minister stated that, as in football, those who commit indiscipline are thrown out of the game and the match continues.

“It will not be up to us to judge. The crimes that are said to be common, which were crimes committed individually, are crimes against civilians. The command did not participate in that”, he said.

Múcio said he had “a thesis” about the camps set up near barracks after the election campaign and said that not everyone agrees with his ideas.

“There were two factions of the Army living together in that camp. But the Armed Forces were not interested in a coup. In a soccer game, a player commits indiscipline, you put him out of the game. The team continues”, said Múcio, citing that, for him, there were the “legalists” and the “indignants”.

The best-known camp was in Brasilia, where Bolsonaristas who tried to invade the Federal Police building, on December 12, and those who destroyed the headquarters of the three Powers, on January 8, left.

At the CPI, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid was silent the entire time and did not respond to any question asked by deputies and senators. Bolsonaro’s former aide refused even to reveal his age.
