President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) increased the maximum daily rates for ministers’ travel across the country. The money, which can be used for accommodation, food and transportation, will, in some cases, reach R$900.
According to the measure, published this Friday (29), the adjustment can reach up to 42% and will be granted from February 15, 2024, six months before the start of the electoral period.
This is the first adjustment in the daily travel allowances of public servants under President Lula’s government. The values had been updated, in 2022, by then president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). For ministers, daily rates rose by up to 15%.
The adjustments will also be applied, in different amounts, to public servants traveling for work across Brazil.
The new values are divided into three categories:
- trips to Brasília, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo: will go from R$ 668.15 to R$900
- trips to other capitals: will go from R$598 to R$800
- other trips in the country: will go from R$ 527.84 to R$750
According to the decree signed by Lula, daily allowances will be granted for each day away from the service headquarters. Payment will not occur, however, in the following cases:
- when the leave does not require an overnight stay
- on the day of return to the workplace
- when the Union covers accommodation expenses
- when the server is hosted in a property belonging to the Union or under government administration
- and when the server is assigned to support the travel support team of the president or vice-president of the Republic
It will also not be done when travel is a permanent requirement of the position and when the trip takes place within the same metropolitan region, unless there is an overnight stay.
The money may also be reduced by 25% if the stay lasts more than 120 consecutive days.
