Lula hopes that parliamentarians, “in a mature way”, approve the texts sent by the Executive and “protect the poorest”

Brasilia DF) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Tuesday (29), that the welfare state that exists in European countries, for example, only exists because there is an equitable and fairer contribution from the payment of income by the population. This, according to him, is the government’s objective with the “fair and sensible” measure, announced on Monday (28), of taxing super-rich funds and the capital invested in offshore (companies abroad), which still needs to be approved by the National Congress.

Lula hopes that parliamentarians, “in a mature way”, approve the texts sent by the Executive and “protect the poorest”.

“Here in Brazil, those who pay the most are the poorest. The poorest pay more income tax than the owner of the bank, because he only deducts it from those who live on a salary. People who live on income, people who receive profit at the end of the year, end up not paying income tax. So, what we did is a fair, sensible thing, which I hope that the National Congress, in a mature way, instead of protecting the richest, protects the poorest”, said Lula in the weekly program Conversation with the Presidenttransmitted by Gov channel.

“It is what Brazil needs to be a more democratic society, a more equal society”, he said. “We want to create a middle-class society, where everyone can have a job, everyone can work, everyone can study, everyone can go for a walk, everyone can have access to culture, that is, people can live with more dignity”,

added.

The president also sanctioned the law that expands the income tax exemption range for those who earn up to R$ 2,640 a month.

The government’s objective is for income tax exemption to reach those who earn up to R$ 5,000. “We’re already halfway through,” said Lula. “There are many people who earn a lot and pay very little. And there are many people who earn little and pay a lot, ”she argued.

Lula also sanctioned the law that readjusts the minimum wage to R$1,320. For him, the appreciation of wages is the way to distribute the country’s wealth. “As the economy grows, this growth will be shared with the working people, and that is what will allow us to use the word ‘that we are starting to distribute the wealth of this country’s growth’. If we have this for several years, we can transform Brazilian society into a society with a better quality of life”, he said.

The text sanctioned this Tuesday also establishes the minimum wage appreciation policy, which provides for a real increase equivalent to the positive variation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP, sum of goods and services produced in the country) of two years prior to the new value. The policy will come into force from 2024, when the minimum wage should reach R$1,461.

The president also highlighted the importance of investments in education and science for the country’s development. He recalled that, this month, he announced in Rio de Janeiro the first University of Mathematics of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa).

According to Lula, new federal institutes will also be built throughout the country, and the government wants to take an extension of the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA) to the state of Ceará, since 40% of those approved in the institute are from Ceará. ITA is a public higher education institution of the Brazilian Air Force, located in São José dos Campos (SP).

Next week, the president will be in São Paulo for the launching of works on a new public college in the east zone of the city of São Paulo. “The more education we give ourselves, the more chance we have of being a developed country, a country that will improve people’s lives”, he defended. “We have a lot of people who are geniuses, you just have to give them the opportunity to emerge”, he added.
