Lula government will have scholarships abroad for black women – 07/20/2023 – Education

The Lula government announced, this Thursday (20), a scholarship program for doctoral and postdoctoral sandwich studies abroad for black, quilombola, indigenous and gypsy women.

Entitled “Atlânticas – Program Beatriz Nascimento de Mulheres na Ciência” the initiative provides for at least 45 vacancies to be made available. The details of the selection process have not yet been disclosed.

The announcement took place during an event in Belém (PA). The initiative will invest around BRL 8 million, in partnership with the ministries of Science and Technology, Women, Indigenous Peoples, CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and Capes.

Women who are regularly enrolled in a doctoral course recognized by Capes or who have completed a graduate program may participate in the selection.

“At the beginning, we wanted to raise the subject, which is very pertinent. Few black people still access the gym as it should be”, said Anielle Franco, Minister of Racial Equality.

According to CNPq data, black women account for 4.9% of the current sandwich doctorate scholarship holders in the country. White women are 30.9% of the people contemplated. No indigenous women currently benefit from the program.

In the post-doctorate abroad, black women are 12.6% of the scholarship holders, white women are 37.7% and there are no indigenous women either.

Anielle Franco’s portfolio also announced that it will sign a protocol of intentions with the UnB (University of Brasília) to offer master’s scholarships to seven students in the Graduate Program in Sustainability with Traditional Peoples and Territories.

The minister stated that she found a dismantling of transversal education policies aimed at the black population, when she took over the portfolio at the beginning of the current government, in reference to previous administrations.

“We have a country where, unfortunately, people think that racism is mimimi and that access to and permanence in universities [a gente] You don’t have to talk about it either, but it’s not what we believe,” he said.

Regarding the criteria for participation, the minister said that the public notice is still being launched and that the program will be finalized seeking to meet the demands, with the requirements elaborated together with the other ministries.
