The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wants to review the values of the Mariana agreement. The AGU (Advocacia-Geral da União), which coordinates the legal negotiations on behalf of the ministries involved, was unable to locate the memory of the calculation that led to the figure, nor an opinion of advantage, which would assess whether the settlement is interesting for the federal management .

Without the two documents, which should have already been drawn up by the previous administrations, there is no certainty as to whether the amounts will be sufficient to settle the losses and cover the expenses resulting from the recovery of the Rio Doce basin.

According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, of the more than R$100 billion that are being dealt with, only R$6 billion would go to the federal administration. Even so, the payments would be spread over 20 years, and the start would not be immediate.

The main obstacle is related to the discharge term. To disburse the figures of what is being treated as the biggest deal in history, the companies involved demand to be released from any future lawsuits.

Even in the management of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the term of discharge was a concern. It is not possible to predict, for example, what the impacts of mining tailings on the Rio Doce will be in the future, nor what effects the metals present in the water may have on the health of the local population.

Meanwhile, the ministries involved, such as Fisheries, Mines and Energy and Environment and Climate Change, are redoing the analyzes of each area. The forecast is that there will be a new meeting with the Chief of Staff, with the participation of the affected states, to assess what can still be changed without delaying the signature too much.

As the Panel showed, this new round must include Bahia, which until now has not officially participated in the negotiations.
