Lula government revokes homage to Princess Isabel – 03/04/2023 – Panel

The Ministry of Human Rights revoked the “Princess Isabel Order of Merit”, which had been instituted by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) administration at the end of last year in recognition of actions in this area.
According to the ministry, honoring the heiress to the imperial throne, a white woman, for her struggle in the area of human rights sends the wrong message.
In place of the order, the ministry created an award named after Luiz Gama (1830-82), a black abolitionist of the 19th century.
“It is not a question of stating that a white person cannot join the anti-racist struggle, but of reaffirming the vital symbol that involves this substitution: the recognition of an abolitionist black man as a defender of human rights”, says the executive secretary of the ministry, Rita Oliveira.
The award in honor of the princess, who signed the Lei Áurea, in 1888, had been created by Bolsonaro on December 8 of last year, exactly one month before the invasion of public buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes by coup demonstrators.
Princess Isabel is traditionally a figure exalted by conservatives in Brazil, while the left tends to favor heroes like Zumbi and Luiz Gama himself.
