This Tuesday (30), when speaking at the closing of the National Education Conference (Conae), at the University of Brasília (UnB), President Lula (PT) demanded the support of teachers so that the left can elect councilors and mayors in the municipal elections this year.

“This year there will be elections for councilor and mayor. What will be our role in these elections? Could it be that teachers across Brazil are unable to elect a councilor in each city? It is important for us to take into account that everything we want goes through politics and we are noticing the growth of the extreme right, the growth of hate, the growth of prejudice, the growth of denial of things in this country, the so-called political of customs taking care of greater interests at national level”, said the PT member.

Lula also instructed his supporters to talk to “those they don’t like” in Congress to facilitate the approval of agendas of interest to the left.

As has been recurrent in his speeches since returning to the Presidency, Lula also attacked the former president, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and inflamed the audience against the portion of the population that does not agree with the proposals discussed at Conae and which will serve as a basis for public educational policies until 2034.

As shown by People’s Gazette, Conae had several structural problems. In October, the MEC and the presidency released the base document to guide discussions at the event. The text has several ideological issues, making clear opposition to “ultra-conservative policies”, such as homeschooling and opposition to agribusiness in the classroom.

When attacking Bolsonaro, Lula said that his predecessor was against public education by promoting civic-military schools and trying to make homeschooling viable.

Preceding Lula, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, celebrated the increase in the department’s budget and said that the return of the Conference represents “the rescue of democracy”.
