Lula defends investments in education in Brazil

When visiting the works of the new headquarters of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), in Rio de Janeiro, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva returned this Thursday (10) to the application of public resources in educational programs and the construction of universities as a way to prevent the departure of Brazilian researchers to other countries.

“There are still a lot of people who think we spend, think we’re spending doing this college, think we’re spending making apartments for the kids to live in. Everything you do that brings a beneficial result for people, for the municipality, for the state and for the Union is an investment, not an expense. There is no cheaper investment than investing in education”.

The new Impa headquarters, located in the port region of Rio, will house the institute’s first undergraduate course. The federal government will allocate R$ 16.7 million for the creation of the course. Students will be selected based on their performance in the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP). The course will start in 2024, with the opening of 100 vacancies.

Lula also criticized the previous government which, in his assessment, did not contribute to education. “It is not acceptable that a happy country, which likes music, which likes to dance, which has wonderful and happy people, votes for a liar, for a guy who told 11 lies a day. A citizen who made fake news every single day, who preached hate, who preached contempt and did not educate, and did not encourage anyone to buy a book, only to buy a gun.”

During the speech, Lula also mentioned the launch of the new Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), scheduled for this Friday (11), in Rio de Janeiro

“Petrobras will stop sending all dividends to shareholders and will send part of the dividends to be transformed into investment to produce more gas, more oil, more pipeline and produce more scientific and technological knowledge”,

said the president.

R$ 240 billion are planned for the next four years in areas such as transport, energy, urban infrastructure, digital inclusion, inclusive social infrastructure and water for all. Other areas such as defense, education, science and technology should also be included in the new program.
