During his speech lasting more than an hour at a meeting to review the 100 days of government, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Monday (10), that the actions of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) against the election results on January 8 were an attempted coup.

On the other hand, he avoided directly mentioning his predecessor, and said that his government is creating a new phase in the country.

Lula said he was grateful for people’s understanding for the historic moment the country is experiencing. “Especially after the coup attempt on January 8, when Brazilian society saw, after a long time, Brazilian institutions come together to defend democracy”, said the president.

On the occasion, Bolsonar supporters who did not accept the election result invaded and destroyed the headquarters of the three branches of government. Despite remembering the episode, which he says marked the beginning of his term, Lula did not mention his predecessor, as allies have been advising him not to do. He said that when he took office in 2003, he didn’t do a 100-day event, because it wasn’t necessary, and he praised Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s transition.

“A companion who had, above all, a mark of civility that the ex I am replacing now does not have,” he said, referring to Bolsonaro.

At another time, also in a veiled mention of his predecessor, he called him a “citizen” and said that he wanted to perpetuate fascism in Brazil.

“I always say that, if you add all the presidents from the proclamation until these elections, the sum of all the candidacies together did not spend what this citizen spent in the perspective of perpetuating fascism in this country”.

References to the episode and the predecessor opened the president’s speech to his 37 ministers and government leaders in Congress. He also said that “we are creating a new phase in the country’s history” and showed optimism.
