A decree signed by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) authorized the entry of 294 soldiers from the United States armed forces into Brazilian territory to carry out a combined exercise with the Army. The authorization was published this Thursday (19).
The operation, known as Combined Operation and Rotation Exercise (Core), is carried out annually in partnership with US forces. In 2022, for example, Brazilian military personnel participated in the joint exercise in the United States.
This year, “Core 23” will be held in Pará and Amapá. According to the Northern Military Command, this will be the first time that the combined exercise with the North American Army will take place in Amazonian territory.
The combined training exercise will take place in the municipality of Belém, state of Pará, and in the municipalities of Ferreira Gomes, Macapá and Oiapoque, in the state of Amapá.
The Army reported that the exercise aims to “increase the operational capacity of the troops, maintain the historical ties between the countries and increase integration and cooperation between the two armies”.
The exercise will take place between October 29th and November 20th. In addition to authorizing military personnel to enter the country, the government also allowed US forces to enter Brazil with weapons, accessories, ammunition, optronics, optical devices and sensors and command, control and communication equipment.
The Core emerged through a Defense Cooperation Agreement between Brazil and the United States promulgated in 2015 by then president Dilma Rousseff.
