Lula and the fascists ‘everywhere’ – 12/16/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

The government launched a campaign with the slogan “Brazil is one people”. One of the videos talks about “peace and rebuilding ties”. Minister Paulo Pimenta pointed out that the country continues to be marked by polarization and said that it is necessary to dialogue with “those who did not vote for Lula”.
The president has already stated that some polarization can be healthy. It helps to differentiate projects, energize activists and nurture rejection of opponents. Those in power, however, prefer to reduce this tension to expand the scope of their actions.
Days after the launch of the campaign, the president took measurements of this abyss. Lula complained about a woman who questioned Dilma Rousseff on a plane to make fun of the fact that the former president was traveling in first class. The PT member referred to the passenger as “a fascist” and added that they “are everywhere”.
The biography of that woman is not known. Her choices reveal something. The moralistic charge stands out for its low argumentative quality, but it is part of the game. The public embarrassment of authorities has taken on destructive aspects with the chaos of social media.
Lula probably sees this type of “fascist” as a particular specimen of the “who didn’t vote for Lula” category: an anti-PT member incapable of conversion. The label, in this case, insinuates little about his convictions and much about the attempt to disqualify his attitudes as an opponent.
Bolsonaro voters supported a notably radical project. If Lula believed that everyone was equal, the government would not be looking for the sympathy of some. The indiscriminate use of certain adjectives will strike a chord with many fascists, but it also reinforces the bond of others with the leader who truly deserves that title.
In the last campaign, some PT members classified Tarcísio de Freitas as a fascist by membership. It may be that Lula thinks so, but the president received the governor to give him a check. At the ceremony, the PT member praised his own republican inclination. The photograph was worth more than any advertisement.
