Lula and Biden talk about the environment and workers’ rights

By phone, Brazilian invited colleague to visit the Amazon
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke by telephone this Wednesday afternoon (16) with the President of the United States, Joe Biden. For about 30 minutes, the two heads of state spoke about climate change, environmental preservation, and about the Amazon Summit, held last week in Belém (PA). Lula also expressed solidarity with the victims of the fires in Hawaii and their families.
Lula highlighted the importance of advancing seriously in the debate on climate change. According to the advisory of the Palácio do Planalto, President Biden said he agreed “100%” with the concerns expressed by Lula, recognized the responsibilities of developed countries and the need to support developing countries in dealing with the effects of the climate crisis.
The Brazilian president expressed his intention to transform the country into an example for the world in terms of environmental preservation and energy transition and mentioned the recent launch of the new Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), focusing on these areas.
The two leaders also addressed the joint initiative to advance decent work in the economy of the 21st century, to be proposed by the United States and Brazil, with the participation of representatives of trade union movements and the ILO, on the occasion of the next General Assembly of the United Nations .
“It is the first time I deal with a president interested in workers. Your policies and speeches about the world of work sound like music to my ears and certainly together we can inspire other leaders to look at workers’ issues”
said Lula.
Lula and Biden are due to meet in September, at the G20 summit and at the UN Assembly. Lula reiterated his invitation to President Biden to visit Brazil next year, which could take place in a state in the Amazon region.
