At the request of the first secretary of the Chamber and national president of União Brasil, deputy Luciano Bivar, the Legislative House will award the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, with the Medal of Legislative Merit for “invaluable performance in the defense of democracy”. Bivar is a former ally of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The medal will be awarded to Moraes and other recipients during a ceremony in the Chamber Plenary, on December 6th.
The award was created to honor “authorities, personalities, institutions or entities, campaigns, programs or movements of a social, civil or military nature, national or foreign, who have provided relevant services to the Legislative Branch or to Brazil”.
Bolsonaro broke up with Bivar, in 2019, due to disagreements over the command of the extinct PSL, the party that won the former president’s candidacy the previous year.
This will not be the first time that Moraes has received honor from a legislative house.
In November last year, the magistrate was honored with the Tiradentes Medal awarded by the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj). The medal is considered one of the state’s highest honors.
The tribute to the minister was proposed by the president of Alerj, deputy André Ceciliano, from PT.
“We only arrived here today due to the determination of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who guaranteed democracy in our country. He was very firm in the pre-election period, on election day and post-election”, said Ceciliano at the time.
