Senator Lucas Barreto (PSD/AP) wants Petrobras to use the old Icomi Port as its operational port, for future oil prospecting in Amapá. The parliamentarian claims that in addition to providing opportunities for the recovery of the floating pier, this base would represent more than 1,200 direct jobs and six thousand indirect jobs. “It’s another world”, says the senator, who promises to return to the issue of research licensing.
The senator also expressed his concern about the performance of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). He questioned the information released by the environmental agency about a possible oil spill 438 kilometers off the coast of Amapá.
Barreto defended the need for a more critical analysis of the reports, considering “the recent occurrence of fake news”. The senator also questioned the authorities’ response time in environmental emergency situations and highlighted that, if Petrobras were operating in Amapá to explore oil basins, the response to emergencies would be more efficient.
— In addition to the permanent support force, we would also have high technology for satellite monitoring, in real time, of high-speed vessels, in addition to the necessary resources to act in these emergencies — he said.
The parliamentarian also emphasized his support for oil exploration on the coast of Amapá, arguing that the activity is “essential for the development of the region, with the generation of royalties for the whole of Brazil”. He highlighted the importance of balancing environmental preservation with economic development.
— Amapá is the most preserved state in the world and, at the same time, the richest state. The problem is that they have made us environmental slaves. We keep saying: “We don’t want to drop a leaf! It is not a tree; It’s not even a leaf!” The problem is that no one can live in the Amazon on chlorophyll or photosynthesis.
