the senator Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP) criticized, in a statement on Wednesday (10), the failure to issue an environmental license for prospecting for oil and gas on the equinoctial platform in the Amazon, off the coast of Amapá. The parliamentarian said he had invited the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, and the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, to provide clarification on the case at the Infrastructure Commission (CI).
“More than ten years have passed since the auction of these areas, which should already be producing hydrocarbons, that is, oil and gas, in the pre-salt of the Brazilian equinoctial coast, precisely 175 kilometers away from the Atlantic coast of Amapá, near to the border with French Guiana, and 50 km from two positive wells drilled in the territorial sea of French Guiana”he said.
The senator pointed out that confirmations of large oil reserves in Guyana have already surpassed eight billion barrels, which were found in the geological formations of the equinoctial pre-salt, on the plateau of French Guiana and Suriname, being the same equinoctial oil formations in Amapá and of the Brazilian Northeast.
Lucas Barreto also stated that Amapá has already overcome several ideological and media barriers, such as the existence of “false corals” at the mouth of the Amazon. According to him, it has already been scientifically demonstrated that these are lifeless rocks, which were living corals more than 18,000 years ago.
“After the lifeless corals, the invisible enemies of Brazil and Amapá claimed that the mangroves at the mouth of the Amazon are under threat. If mangroves were a reason to ban oil drilling, we wouldn’t have any wells in Southern Brazil, from Rio Grande do Sul to the Northeast, because all coastal areas have mangroves”compared.
