Lira sends a message to Lula and says that laws passed by Congress cannot go back

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), gave a tough message to the government this Tuesday morning (9) that the laws and landmarks already approved by Congress should not be questioned. The speech was given during participation in one of the panels at the event Lide Brazil Investment Forum, held in New York.

Lira’s statement took place while explaining the “reformist character” of Congress in recent years, highlighting already approved reforms, such as social security, labor and administrative, which are ready to be taken to the plenary. He also mentioned that the Chamber’s goal for this semester is to approve the new fiscal and tax rules, but that what has already been approved in the past cannot be changed.

“The main reform that Congress has to address is not the right one, as many say, like the tax. And yes, not to let go of everything that has already been approved in Brazil in the sense of the breadth of what is liberal. We have to watch all the time, ”he said.

Lira cited the recent vote on two decrees signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in April, which changed some of the main innovations brought about by the new legal framework for basic sanitation. The parliamentarians rejected the modifications by 295 to 136, imposing a defeat on the government.

“We have to respect contracts in our country, such as the electricity sector and sanitation”, added Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), who also participated in the panel with Lira.

Arthur Lira also mentioned that the Chamber is committed to approving the tax reform that “is possible”, and that it will have no difficulty in negotiating with the government. “The world in Brazil is not the same as it was in 2002, when we did not have the Fiscal Responsibility Law and Congress had a greater role”, he added in his message to the government.
