Lira says there is room to reduce interest rates, but defends a ‘natural’ drop in rates

Artificially reducing rates could hurt the economy and the poorest population, said the mayor

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), defended the reduction of the interest rate “naturally” and explained that artificially lowering interest rates could harm the economy and the poorest people. “I think things have to happen naturally, acting artificially could hurt the lower layers. Everyone played their part and I don’t see the will to keep the interest rates as they are”said Lira in an interview with the program Living Wheelfrom TV Cultura, this Monday (31).

“I think the president [do Banco Central, Roberto Campos Neto] is observing these movements and now, yes, interest rates will go down, but they have to go down naturally, based on the laws that we approved”

he stated.

According to Arthur Lira, the improvement in the country’s economic outlook is precisely due to the guidelines approved by the Chamber, including the autonomy of the Central Bank. According to him, parliamentarians are not considering putting an end to this independence, which has shown positive effects.

Tax framework

The mayor once again stated that, by the end of the month, the House should vote on the text with the changes approved by the Senate in the new fiscal framework (PLP 93/23).

In the text approved by the deputies, the spending limits do not include the policy of valuing the minimum wage, transfers to states and municipalities, seasonal expenses, extraordinary credits for unpredictable expenses and neutral revenues, that is, obtained from donations or own revenues from public entities. .

The Senate added three other exceptions: supplementing resources for the Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and for the Valorization of Education Professionals (Fundeb), the Constitutional Fund of the Federal District and resources for science, technology and innovation. Now deputies need to analyze these changes.

“We have a deadline of August 31 [quando deve ser votada a Lei de Diretrizes Orçamentárias] and until then we will only focus on the changes. The rest is in order, it is priced by the financial market”

said the president.

Tax reform

Regarding the tax reform, approved by the Chamber last month, Lira said he hoped that the Senate would vote on the text this semester to enable its enactment in 2023. In this way, the complementary laws that will regulate points of the reform could already be analyzed in the first semester of next year.

Political articulation

Lira also said that the relationship between the Planalto Palace and the Chamber has improved a lot and demanded compliance with established agreements. “What has to exist is sit down, talk, resolve and comply. That which has to exist”evaluated.

He again defended the adoption of the semi-presidential system, which, in his opinion, would favor a more harmonious relationship between the powers, with a clearer division of management.

According to Lira, the country has a parliamentary constitution and a presidential administration, in which the Legislative occupies space in the Executive, and the Executive interferes in Parliament.

The mayor was also asked about Federal Police investigations into allies in Alagoas. “It would be very reckless to defend the budget and be involved with the sale of a parliamentary amendment to the city hall. I cannot answer for allies.”said Lyra.
