Lira promises vote on tax reform for “before the recess”

Brasilia DF) – On the eve of the vote on the project for the new fiscal framework in the Chamber of Deputies, the President of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said that he intends to guide the tax reform for analysis by parliamentarians in the first half, before the mid-term recess of the year. This is what the Metropolises website reports.

“After the vote on the framework, we still have June and July to finish these discussions and manage to guide the plenary of the Chamber, even before the recess at the end of July”, said the president of the Chamber.

Lira participated, on Friday (5/19), in Rio de Janeiro, in a meeting of the South and Southeast Integration Consortium (Cosud), which brought together state governors from both regions. Tax reform was the main theme of the discussions, but he had not guaranteed a vote on the proposal for this semester.

For Lira, the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) needs to make an effort to approve important projects, such as the fiscal framework and the tax reform, in this first year of office.

“If a government does not carry out its reforms in the first year, it is no longer able to carry them out because of the electoral calendars, which are always divided in the country”, said the deputy, referring to the 2024 municipal elections.

According to the president of the Chamber, “some more arduous themes that would come up in the discussion of the tax reform can be anticipated in this post-voting discussion of the fiscal framework”.

Lira also stated that Brazil needs to “simplify and improve the tax system”. For him, as it is a complex project that involves many interests, “the best vote is possible”.

“What we agreed here was that the agenda, which is our duty, will now be in the first half. I cannot guarantee approval. I can ensure broad discussion and facilitate debate,” she concluded.
