The mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), has been advised to get tough with the most radical newly elected parliamentarians.
The assessment of moderate and center deputies is that Lira is at risk of losing control and ending up being demoralized. According to them, the president has the strength and support of the majority to adopt tough measures.
This Thursday (22), for example, the President of the House was confronted by Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ), an ally of the Bolsonaro family. The deputy questioned whether he would “start now” the ban on dealing with other matters during the orientation of the benches.
“It exists, Deputy Carlos Jordy, and Your Excellency is not going to argue with me from below. Your Excellency cannot do that. Your Excellency will respect it. Everyone will,” countered the president.
The alert was ignited after two close episodes viewed with severity by moderates. The first was led by newcomer Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) who used the platform to make a transphobic speech.
Lira even scolded him and said that the plenary of the House is not “a stage for exhibitionism and much less prejudiced speeches”.
It was not enough. Days later, deputy Júlia Zanatta (PL-SC) published a photo carrying a rifle with a reference to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Lira told the leaders who contacted him that he intends to curb the situation by setting up a strong and independent Ethics Council to respond to these episodes.
He has maintained that he cannot put a gag on rookies, but that they need to understand that they are responsible for whatever actions they take.
The Ethics Council did not enter into the agreement reached by the commissions last week. The leaders must meet this Thursday (23) to choose the holders and the presidency.
