The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this Monday (13) that the Powers of the Republic need to find a “middle way” when dealing with freedom of expression. The statement was made during an event promoted by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in Rio de Janeiro.
“Brazilian society hopes that administrators, elected representatives and magistrates in this country will be able to find, as soon as possible, a way to balance the phenomenon of social networks, democracy and freedom of expression, so that we can move forward with peace of mind on the path political stability and the social and economic progress it entails,” he said.
According to Lira, social networks are vehicles for freedom of expression and democracy, but demonstrations can be easily restricted, even by journalists or parliamentarians, “with a mere click”. Only with balance, according to him, can a formula be found that preserves both rights. “We cannot give up one of them, under penalty of losing the other and, with that, plunging ourselves into the unpredictable turmoil of social instability”, stated Lira.
The FGV event was attended by several authorities, parliamentarians, such as the rapporteur for the Fake News PL, Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP), in addition to representatives of social networks, and the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court, Alexandre de Moraes and Gilmar Mendes.
