Retired Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Ricardo Lewandowski greeted and received the blessing of Pope Francis, in Rome.
He traveled to the country to attend a seminar on taxation and the digital economy at Sapienza University. At the event, Lewandowski defended that the supreme courts should reinterpret constitutional norms in the light of social changes and reflect on new forms of taxation.
The minister retired last month, after 17 years in the Supreme Court. He presided over the court itself, the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) in the 2010 general elections, the Senate —and even occupied the Presidency of the Republic on an interim basis.
Lewandowski got his Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) card back and is setting up a law firm in the central area of Brasília. Now, he must dedicate himself to giving opinions and acting as a lawyer in causes he considers relevant.
Doctor and associate professor in State law at USP, Lewandowski also holds a master’s degree in the area of International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, in cooperation with Harvard.
