Left-wing deputies sent a letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) asking for the appointment of a black woman to the position of minister at the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The appointment will be to replace Minister Rosa Weber, who retires this Saturday (30).

“The demand for a black minister is essential to advance the necessary transformation of the Brazilian justice system, not only because of the importance of seeing black people being represented, but because of all the possible structural changes in the way the law will be interpreted, the right applied and justice done”, they state.

In the letter, they mention that “in the higher courts, women occupy only 18% of the vacancies, a similar amount to the very low representation they have in the National Congress. If we consider black women, the scenario is even bigger.”

Finally, the parliamentarians insist that “the choice of a black woman as minister of the Supreme Court represents a crucial political-social advance and would confirm this government’s commitment to equality, inclusion and diversity”.
