Lawyers for those arrested on January 8 reported difficulties in accessing the office of the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, during a visit to the Court’s magistrates, this Wednesday (13). During the visits, documents were delivered with reports on the health situation of the prisoners and a new request for release. The precautionary measures were also requested to be removed.

In a video recorded in front of the STF building, lawyer Ezequiel Silveira said that the investigation was received in all offices, except the office of minister Alexandre de Moraes.

Even though the visit had been scheduled in advance, the lawyer was informed that the service should only be provided by email or telephone.

“They said they don’t get lawyers. The only service they provide is via email or telephone. Not even with an appointment. So, we are going to formalize this complaint, once again, at the Federal Council of the OAB to show how Minister Alexandre de Moraes has treated lawyers”, reported Silveira in a video shared on his social networks.

According to the Association of Families and Victims of 8 de Janeiro (Asfav), there are prisoners from 8/1 with serious physical and mental health situations, and there are already 26 people with a favorable opinion on release, awaiting a decision. Lawyers have made repeated calls for these opinions to be assessed by the STF.

The appeals intensified after the death of businessman Cleriston Pereira, which occurred on November 20, in Papuda, after the STF ignored several warnings about the prisoner’s health status. Cleriston had an opinion from the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in favor of release.

Asfav representatives also cited the case of the usher and painter Claudinei Pego da Silva, aged 42, who attempted suicide inside the cell where he is being held, in Papuda, last Saturday (9). Claudinei suffers from comorbidities and has already had a favorable opinion on release denied by Alexandre de Moraes.

On Tuesday (12), the lawyers also delivered to the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) the same documentation reporting the situation in which those arrested by 8/1 are in prisons.
