Lawyer Sebastião Coelho da Silva, who gained notoriety for challenging the ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) during the trial of one of the 8 de Janeiro defendants, has a history of defending clients in media cases.
In 2005, he was the lawyer of Maurício Marinho, then a postal worker, caught on camera receiving cash bribes. Marinho’s exposure, who was nominated by the PTB, led then-deputy Roberto Jefferson to denounce the monthly allowance scheme.
In the same year, Coelho defended businessman Sebastião Buani, who owned a snack bar in the Chamber of Deputies and denounced that he paid a “little monthly” to the then president of the House, Severino Cavalcanti (PP-PE), later forced to resign from his position .
Coelho’s work as a lawyer at the time occurred during a break in his career as a judge at the Federal District Court of Justice.
He requested retirement in 2004, but it was reversed by decision of the Federal Audit Court four years later, due to failure to meet the minimum requirements. Reinstated in his career, he retired again last year and returned to law.
Coelho defended Aécio Pereira, one of the defendants for the coup attacks in Praça dos Três Poderes. During the trial, he told the STF ministers that they were “the most hated people in the country”.
When contacted, the lawyer stated that he preferred not to comment on his past activities. “It would not be ethical to speak without the authorization of former clients,” he declared.
