Kim Kardashian’s nipples – 11/12/2023 – Giovana Madalosso

I almost fell backwards when I saw the latest launch of Kim Kardashian’s product line. In a video posted on her Instagram, the model, wearing a skin-tight outfit, with visibly hard nipples, comments that the planet is warming, sea levels are rising and glaciers are melting.

“I’m not a scientist but I think everyone can do their part”, she says, pointing out that her part is the one above: a new model of bra that comes with hard, fake nipples attached to the padding.

“That way, no matter how much it gets hot, your nipples will still feel cold. And, unlike icebergs, they won’t disappear.”

Until I watched this commercial, I didn’t know I was supposed to sport hard nipples all day. Kardashian, like a good daughter of capitalism, knows how to create solutions where there are no problems. So much so that I’m already here, typing with one hand and stimulating my breasts with the other, and resisting not to get into the merits of aesthetic oppression and consumerism, since this launch presents other even more turgid aspects to discuss.

Even though the climate crisis is already among us, with record temperatures and natural disasters, this issue remains, in general, restricted to scientists, activists and environmentalists, when it should be on the lips of the people, after all, it is in the lap of the people that the bomb will explode with more and more force.

If this issue already impacts and will impact the lives of billions of people, why don’t we talk about it at the company party or Sunday lunch? Because the climate crisis is also a crisis of language — since the 1980s, experts have struggled to popularize the issue and mobilize society without much success until today.

That’s why it’s so exciting when the climate issue migrates from the specialized media to the store fitting room. From the mouths of scientists to the mouths of models. From spreadsheets to the wardrobe. Or even better: between the sheets, ceasing to be hermetic and staid content to become uncomplicated and even sexy, to the point of entering the captivating space of pop culture, a necessary springboard for it to gain breadth.

Kardashian is right when she says that “everyone must do their part”, in the sense that this subject is not anyone’s monopoly, that everyone can and should explore it in aspects that affect their universe and their daily lives . She also gets the form of communication right, direct and humorous, but makes a big mistake in the design and production of the product.

The bra in question is made of nylon and Spandex: both non-biodegradable and derived from petroleum, the great villain of climate warming. Information that makes the influencer’s marketing strategy collapse like a glacier.

Perhaps, to compensate, the model announces that 10% of sales will go to an environmental organization, without making it very clear how carbon offsetting will be done. Wouldn’t it be little for someone who already makes so much money at the expense of an economic system that has been destroying the planet?

This all smells like a case of nipplewashing to me. Who knows, Kim Kardashian is just a neoliberal thinking that the market is capable of regulating even the Earth’s temperature. I’m sorry, Kim, but if that’s the case, her nipples are sorely mistaken.
