The Electoral Justice sentenced federal deputy Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) to eight years of ineligibility for abuse of economic power in the 2020 electoral dispute.

The conviction refers to Crivella’s ticket, then candidate for re-election for City Hall of Rio, defeated in the second round in 2020. Eduardo Paes (PSD), Crivella’s opponent at the time, and the coalition composed of Citizenship, DC , PV, PSDB, AVANTE, PL and DEM.

The decision is at first instance and can be appealed. Crivella’s defense informed the newspaper O Globo that it will appeal the sentence of Judge Márcia Santos Capanema de Souza, from the 23rd Electoral Zone of Rio de Janeiro. UOL tries to contact the politician’s advisory.

The magistrate also asked for Crivella’s term of office as a federal deputy, elected in the 2022 election. The defense told the newspaper that this decision does not have immediate effect.

Pamphlets with fake news against Eduardo Paes

The sentence points out that Crivella’s ticket distributed campaign material in 2020 defining the current mayor as a defender of the legalization of drugs, abortion and gender ideology (“gay kit in schools”).

The ineligibility is valid for the eight years following the 2020 municipal election. The sentence will also be applied to Andréa Firmo, then a candidate for vice on the Crivella ticket.

The judge also demanded that Andréa Firmo return BRL 42,499.50 to the Electoral Court for using campaign resources to produce 1.5 million pamphlets with false information about Paes.

Justice, however, denied Paes’ request to recognize abuse of political power by Crivella’s ticket in publicizing a work in the city during the campaign.

Paes wrote on Twitter that “here you do it, here you pay” and warned the “liars” that he will go “until the end so that the truth is reestablished”.
