Justice extends blockages for coup acts to BRL 18.5 million – 01/21/2023 – Power

The Federal Court increased to R$ 18.5 million the value for blocking assets of suspected sponsors of coup acts on January 8.

The decision signed on Friday (20) meets the request of the AGU (Advocacy General of the Union) and considers new calculations on the damage caused by Bolsonarists in public buildings in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília.

Justice had blocked BRL 6.5 million, on the last 12th, in goods and rights of people, entities and companies that would be involved with the coup attacks. The measure is a way of trying to guarantee resources to renovate the buildings of Congress, Planalto and STF (Federal Supreme Court).

The first decision was based on an estimate of damage to the Chamber and Senate buildings.

The calculation on the total damage is still being fine-tuned, but the AGU has now cited that the Chamber points to a value of R$ 1.1 million in damage, still not considering the cost to restore works of art.

In Planalto, damages of R$ 7.9 million are estimated.

In the STF, the action of Bolsonaristas caused a loss of at least R$ 5.92 million. When asking for the extension of the blockade, the AGU stated that the estimate of damage to public buildings is undersized.

In the ruling on Friday (20), federal judge Francisco Alexandre Ribeiro stated that the blockades aim to “ensure the compensation of millionaires for property damage caused to the public purse”.

Some of the defendants who had assets blocked would have financed the transport of Bolsonaristas to Brasília.

“The defendants played a decisive role in the factual development that occurred on January 8, 2023 and, therefore, must respond for the damage caused to the federal public property and derived from these acts”, said the AGU in the first request made to Justice to block the assets. .

“The seriousness of the facts practiced and in which the defendants were involved, which, more than harming the federal public property, implied a real threat to the Brazilian democratic regime, requires a swift and effective response”, he added.
