June 2013 recorded deaths in demonstrations; see cases – 06/17/2023 – Power

The June 2013 Journeys recorded, in addition to the widespread dissatisfaction of the population with public services and public transport tariffs, deaths, injuries and indignation among those who lost their loved ones.

According to the NGO Artigo 19, at least 837 people were injured in the demonstrations that month across Brazil, 117 of them journalists covering the events. Another 2,608 people were detained by the military police, including ten media professionals.

In Teresina, capital of Piauí, 14-year-old student Paulo Patrick Silva de Castro died after being run over on June 26. He was hit when the demonstration blocked a bridge and a confrontation with riot police from Piauí began. A taxi overtook him to cross to the other side of the lane.

A year later, in an interview with G1, Paulo Patrick’s mother complained about the length of the investigation, and claimed to have moved house due to the difficulty of maintaining the routine as before after her son’s death.

Marcos Delefrate, 18 years old, was run over during a protest in Ribeirão Preto (313 km from São Paulo) on June 20, the day of the biggest demonstrations across the country. A businessman was surrounded by demonstrators and broke through the blockade, running over four people, including the then high school student.

The funeral brought together about a thousand people, including non-conformist family members and friends, as well as members of movements that participated in the act with the student. The school where he was enrolled took to the streets of the city in an act of solidarity. Delefrate’s mother stated, at the time, that she did not believe in any political changes in the country.

In Rio de Janeiro, actor Fernando da Silva Candido, 34, died of respiratory problems after being hit by pepper spray and tear gas during a demonstration also on June 20.

He was one of the founders of the Baixada Fluminense Guerrilla Cinema, which brings together filmmakers and actors from São João do Meriti to produce films and offer workshops to young people from the periphery.

Another case occurred in Pelotas (RS), with truck driver Renato Kranlow, 44, who died when he broke through a roadblock during a protest and was hit by a stone that went through the windshield and hit his neck.

The victim’s brother, Ermani Kranlow, said he saw no problem with demonstrations of any kind, “I just don’t agree with this type of violent attitude.” Renato left his wife and a 14-year-old daughter at the time.

In Belém, capital of Pará, street sweeper Cleonice Vieira de Moraes, 54, died after a tear gas bomb exploded during an act in the city. She was hypertensive and, according to the Hospital Pronto Socorro do Guamá, suffered five cardiac arrests when she was rescued.

Adriano Moraes, one of Cleonice’s sons, said that the mother should not be working at the place.
