Gold favorite in the 57 kilo category, the Olympic champion rafael silva is out of the individual dispute of the World Judo, in Doha (Qatar). Number 1 in the ranking and two-time world champion, the Brazilian lost in her debut to the Turkish Hasret Bozkurte (61st), who landed a waza-ri just 15 seconds into the fight and then an ippon a minute and a half before the end of the bout. The carioca returns to the mat at the Worlds on Sunday (14th), in the mixed team competition, the last day of the Worlds.
“The fight was fast, it was due to the athlete and she ended up surprising me and studied me a lot. Judo is that, in a matter of seconds a fight can be over”said the judoka, shortly after the defeat, in a statement to the Brazilian Judo Confederation (CBJ).
Also in the women’s 57 kg category, São Paulo’s Jéssica Lima (17th in the world ranking) made her debut, who easily defeated Czech Vêra Zemanová (31st) and, subsequently, defeated Kosova’s Flaka Loxha (34th). However, in the round of 16, Jessica was beaten by Canadian Jessica Klikait, Olympic medalist and number 3 in the world.
Cycle to Paris 2024
The Judo World Cup awarded up to 2,000 points (champion) in the classification ranking for Paris 2024. With 23 Olympic podiums conquered to date, Brazil seeks to secure a place in each of the 14 individual categories, in addition to the team tournament in Paris.
The accumulation of points in the International Judo Federation (IJF) ranking began in July 2022 and will only end in June of next year. The modality will bring together 372 athletes in Paris (equally divided between men and women). The top 17 in the category ranking secure a place in Paris 2024 (with a limit of one judoka per country). From the 18th place in the ranking, vacancies will be distributed by continent: Americas (21 vacancies), Africa (24), Europe (25), Asia (20) and Oceania (10).
