Jon Jones submits Gané and makes history; Alexa Grasso submits Shevchenko and breaks the bank

Jon Jones is the new UFC heavyweight champion. The former light heavyweight champion needed half of the first round to pin Ciryl Gané and settle with a guillotine choke in the main event of UFC 285, held this morning in Las Vegas.

The women’s flyweight has a new queen. Alexa Grasso, who was losing to Valentina Shevchenko until the final minute of the fourth round, took advantage of a blunder by the then champion to pick things up, fit a rear naked choke and break the bank.

In a fight valid for the same division, the Brazilian Amanda Ribas won the compatriot Viviane Araújo in a true battle. After losing the first round, the girl from Minas Gerais recovered and was superior in the next two, confirming the triumph by unanimous decision.

The other Brazilian on the card, Tabatha Ricci, submitted the experienced Jessica Penne with a beautiful armbar in the second round. Also submitting was Kazakh Shavkat Rakhmonov, who dispatched Geof Neal with a foot choke.

Big name in wrestling, Bo Nickal made his UFC debut by submitting Jamie Pickett with a kata-gatam in a monologue that lasted less than three minutes. Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt defeated Trevin Jones via unanimous decision.
